You can't name a single health problem that doesn't sooner or later make an appearance on the skin. Lyme disease shows up as a rash on the tummy, diabetes often presents as a yeast infection in the groin, and lung cancer can pop up on the scalp or anywhere else that has a blood supply. And then there are the hundreds of diseases that occur primarily on the skin such as psoriasis, acne, warts, and skin cancer. Dermatologists spend an additional 4 years after graduating from medical school learning the ins and outs of skin diseases after which they take a series of exams testing their knowledge and skills. Board Certified means a physician has been well schooled, has passed the necessary exams, and is now fully prepared to treat patients who have skin problems.
